Hugo Karlis Grotus studied at the studio Yu Madernieka and the Central School of Technical Drawing Stieglitz in St. Petersburg.
He worked as an art teacher in the Petersburg school was headmaster Shuvalov – Ozersky.
In 1920, JC Grotus returned to Latvia.
He was a member of Unity of Independent Artists, also a board member, participated in exhibitions of the group (1921 – 34).
In 1984 he organized a memorial exhibition.
