Hugo Mitt graduated from the Jakob Westholm Gymnasium in 1941 and entered the Tallinn School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1942. In 1949 he graduated from the Tallinn State Institute of Applied Arts with a degree in painting.
In 1948–1950 and 1952–1953 he worked as a teacher at the Tallinn State Institute of Applied Arts.
In 1949–1953 he was an employee of the Drama Theatre, and in 1952–1959 a freelance artist at the Estonian State Publishing House. Freelance artist since 1960.
Member of the Union of Artists since 1960.
Hugo Mitt’s works were exhibited for the first time in 1949, solo exhibitions were held in 1963, 1986, 1989 and 1992.
