Born on the estate Arrohof (Aru) at Dorpat son of a district court secretary, he received his elementary education in Fellin (Viljandi) and art classes in various academies of Europe (1866-69 in Dresden, in Antwerp 1869-71, 1871-75 and 1876 in Munich -77 in Dusseldorf). After working as an art teacher and portrait painter in Dorpat. 1883-1908 he headed drawing classes at the German Artisans’ Association. Among his pupils afterwards became more important Estonian artists as M. Pukits, K. Mägi, J. Koort, A. Tassa and K. Raud were (private school). In 1901 he was appointed by the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts on the free artist.
