Soans, Olev (1925 – 1995). The Sailing Ship. (1980s)
Etching on black paper by renowned Estonian artist Olev Soans, created in 1961/62 and titled “The Sailing Ship.” This remarkable piece measures 30 x 35.5 cm and comes with the author’s autograph along with a special note: “Noorus 1961/62.” The work has been reproduced in a magazine. Soans, a graduate of the State Art Institute of Estonia, became one of the most outstanding Estonian graphic artists of the 1950s. In 1979, he became a senior lecturer, and in 1987, a professor. He is celebrated for his intricate etchings, many depicting the history of Estonia, and received the prestigious Kristian Raud prize in 1985.
