Alexander Tolstoy was born into the family of Sergei Tolstoy (b. 1915) in St. Petersburg. Taking part in the civil war. After the war, the artist immigrated to the Czech Republic. Tolstoy graduated from the Higher Technological Academy and the School of Art and Design in Prague (1922-27). Then he graduated from the Prague Academy of Arts (1927 -1930). He was one of the founders of the Czech Union of Russian Artists. After World War II, he was ambassador to Scandinavia, first in Sweden, Dalarna, then in Norway (died in Haslum). Listed in the lexicon of Swedish artists, distinguished as a nude and portrait painter.
