Studied at A.Ažbè school in Munich from 1911 to 1913. His early period was influenced by the avantgarde art, mainly by the artists of the Expessionist group “Der blaue Reiter” (Blue Rider) and its leader V.Kandinsky. In 1913-14 created thr first abstract works in the Estonian art. Turned about 1930 to the Impressionist and at the same time imaginative manner. Professor at “Pallas” Art School in 1919-1941, later at the High Courses of Figurative Art and at the State Institute of Art in Tartu.
